Riverside, Rhode Island

This 1900 bungalow had charm in its bones but had been pieced together over time, leaving three uneven floor levels and a backyard covered in green astroturf. Despite its waterfront setting, the home felt disconnected from its surroundings, and the interiors lacked the brightness needed to balance Rhode Island’s long grey seasons. We saw the opportunity to completely reimagine the cottage—gutting it back to its structure and rebuilding it as a light-filled retreat that celebrated both the river and the rhythm of coastal living.

Our vision focused on bringing vibrancy and flow into the home while embracing a timeless coastal style. Inside, a warm-toned white palette set the backdrop for an open kitchen designed for hosting, where subway tile and distinctive red, purple, and grey granite counters play against classic shaker cabinets. Outside, the transformation was just as dramatic: new hardscaping, fencing, and decking turned the tiered yard into a series of purposeful spaces—a quiet spot for morning coffee, a sun-drenched area for afternoons, shaded corners to escape the heat, and a fire pit terrace for evenings by the water. By aligning the home’s design with its natural setting, the cottage now offers both everyday comfort and a memorable backdrop for gatherings.
